How can I tell if my drinking water contains too much lead?
To determine if your water has lead, you should have your water tested. Testing costs range between $20 and $100. Since you cannot see, taste, or smell lead dissolved in water, testing is the only sure way of telling whether or not there are harmful quantities of lead in your drinking water (Actions You Can Take to Reduce Lead in Drinking Water, EPA810-F-93-001, June 1993). To locate a certified laboratory for lead testing, contact the state laboratory certification officer. Additional information about actions you can take to reduce lead in drinking water is available at http://water.epa.gov/drink/info/lead/index.cfm.
